Research told us 20% of SF residents arrived in the last two years. Social science told us how to motivate them.

Through innovative policies and programs, the SF Department of the Environment works to serve the wellbeing of all San Franciscans. We take great pride in furthering their cause through memorable, multifaceted and inclusive campaigns.

#SFThingToDo

Research told us more than 20% of San Francisco residents have arrived in the last two years. As newbies, these people are ripe for behavioral change. Social science tells us that new arrivals want to fit it in, to be a part of their new city.

Thus was born #SFThingToDo, a campaign of outdoor, social and pop-ups that said, Welcome, you belong here, and part of belonging here is composting and recycling. In fact, just drop by our pop-up booth, post to #SFThingToDo and we’ll give you an extra cool reusable mug.

We created a unique mobile pop-up, gave away many gallons of coffee, and 600+ reusable mugs, and garnered thousands of social posts and shares.

We got the word out on Facebook.

We even created some sharable GIFs, like this.
